Psychological Assessment
Kent Grelling, PhD offers comprehensive psychological assessments designed to elucidate a client's cognitive, academic, and emotional strengths and weaknesses. With many years of experience both writing evaluations and reviewing them as the psychologist at independent schools, Dr Grelling knows what teachers, learning specialists, and other school personnel are looking for when they refer a student for assessment. Dr. Grelling's assessment process is a collaborative one, integrating qualitative information from interviews with clients, teachers, and parents, with quantitative test results. This information is then synthesized to produce an extensive and detailed written report, that helps clients understand their own or their child's unique learning style and emotional makeup. Finally, the report concludes with a list of specific recommendations that parents and teachers can use to optimize a child's performance and well being.
Child and Adolescent Therapy
Dr. Kent Grelling specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents. While many therapists work with children on occasion, he offers families the expertise in child development and therapy that is critical to successful treatment. In addition, he has extensive experience working with children under five-years-old; a sub-specialty that is rare even among child therapists.
But beyond expertise, Dr Grelling has the warmth, sensitivity and humor needed to work effectively with children and adolescents. Because, while you may be concerned about credentials, your child wants a psychologist who listens, makes them laugh, and puts them at ease. The ability to connect with children and adolescents reduces their anxiety about therapy and empowers them to make real change.
A flexible approach.
We work with the families of children in a variety of ways, including individual therapy with the child, family therapy, and parent training. In fact, many parents come to us for parent coaching, where we work without the child, often on a short term basis. In each case, we develop a treatment plan tailored to the needs of the family and the particular concerns being presented.
Neurodevelopmental expertise.
We also have particular expertise in working with children with complex neurodevelopmental problems. Such disorders include syndromes like Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, Learning Disabilities and more. These disorders are increasingly recognized as overlapping and interrelated, and we can help families sort out the complex diagnostic and treatment issues in these cases. We use a developmentally geared, relationship-based approach to treatment, utilizing cognitive-behavioral techniques as they are appropriate to the needs of each client.
